Kicking Gas Campaign—May 21 Deadline to sign up to get up to $10,000 subsidies for heat pumps in Island and Snohomish Counties

LANGLEY, WA – April 22, 2025— Washington’s Kicking Gas campaign has announced a May 21 deadline to get in on up to $10,000 in subsidies for home electrification appliances in Island and Snohomish Counties. There are seven more chances to attend a required Info Session (four online, one in Darrington, WA and one in Marysville, WA). Interested households can sign up for an upcoming event here: https://www.kickgasnow.org/events/

The Kicking Gas campaign, which launched in 2022, was supercharged in June 2024 with a $1.5 million dollar grant from Washington State’s Home Electrification and Appliance Rebates (HEAR) program to provide incentive subsidies to homeowners to decarbonize homes in Island County and Snohomish Counties. Funded by the Climate Commitment Act to accelerate their decarbonization campaign based in rural Island County, WA, Kicking Gas anticipates this funding will facilitate 100 - 120 electrification retrofits for low to moderate income (LMI) households in Island County in 2024 and 2025. Kicking Gas is in their second round of funding from WSU’s Community Energy Efficiency Program, and is now facilitating subsidies for electric home retrofits of up to $10,000 per eligible household in Island and Snohomish Counties.

Kicking Gas is holding information sessions, both in person and online, for homeowners interested in making the switch to electric heat pumps and induction stoves.

Interested parties can also take a survey at kickgasnow.org to find out their eligibility to receive benefits from the program in the form of subsidies and low interest financing.

Derek Hoshiko, Kicking Gas Campaign Director, stated: “We’re in the home stretch of this funding round. For three years we’ve been supporting families in Island County to access affordable, electric heating and cooling. The success of the Kicking Gas campaign reflects the environmental commitment of our community, and a desire to take more meaningful actions when supported to do so. Home electrification measures make for healthier homes. Please join us for an info session, and tell your neighbors!"

Nancy Johnson, Organizer with Sno-Isle Sierra Club, stated: “Our Sierra Club group was so impressed by the work Kicking Gas was doing on Whidbey Island that we brought them to Snohomish County. Installing electric heat and cool pumps and induction stoves provides a climate benefit, a healthy indoor air benefit, and a safety benefit. It's a great way to take climate action from home - and the subsidies make it possible!”

A Groundbreaking Success in Climate Action: In a time of great uncertainty at the Federal level, this rapid and remarkable achievement underscores the power of community-led action and the importance of local and state-level funding for green energy wins. In 2023, with a competitive $1 million grant from Washington State University’s Community Energy Efficiency Program (CEEP), and a short time-frame to execute on the objective of transitioning 100 homes from oil, propane, or wood to cost-effective heat pumps, the campaign not only met its goal but exceeded expectations, installing heat pumps in 117 homes. In 2024, they received continued funding from WSU’s CEEP Program and from the Climate Commitment Act.

Investing in Community Engagement and Local Business: Kicking Gas is offering subsidies of up to $10,000 to cover 20-75% of a total retrofit cost for a heat pump depending on household income and $1,000 for an induction stove. The campaign is committed to supporting locally-owned and independently-operated businesses, including heat pump installers; it has several vetted installers, including Island Ductless Heat Pumps, Energywise, and AP Mechanical on Whidbey Island, and AirGanic in Snohomish County.

About Whidbey Island and Snohomish County Kicking Gas Campaign: The Kicking Gas Campaign is a community-driven initiative aimed at promoting energy efficiency, public health, and environmental sustainability through a focus on the adoption of heat pumps. With the support of local partners and residents, the campaign is leading the way in localized efforts to bring affordable clean energy to homes across the region. Kicking Gas is supported with funding from Washington’s Climate Commitment Act. The CCA supports Washington’s climate action efforts by putting cap-and-invest dollars to work reducing climate pollution, creating jobs, and improving public health. Information about the CCA is available at www.climate.wa.gov.
