Kicking Gas’ Third Year Launches

The Fall season is in full swing, with plenty of leaves turning colors, wind, and rain. I hope you all are staying safe and warm.

Speaking of keeping warm, Kicking Gas just launched our third year of the campaign, and we have a number of exciting announcements! If you’re new to Kicking Gas, welcome. We send one email per month that is our newsletter, and occasionally send additional emails when there’s more to share.

October Info Session
On Wednesday, October 23, 2024 at 6:00 p.m. online via Zoom, we’ll be holding our October Info Session. This is a great opportunity to learn more about heat pumps, induction stoves, and about the Kicking Gas campaign. It is also a requirement for subsidies and microloans. If you haven’t yet, please click here to RSVP for the Info Session.

October: Launching on Bainbridge Island
It’s official, the City of Bainbridge Island has partnered with Kicking Gas to bring high-efficiency heat pumps to Bainbridge Island residents at reduced cost. Beginning in October 2024, residents can attend our monthly Info Sessions and take an eligibility survey to see if they qualify for this program, focused on low and moderate income households during this pilot program.

Thanks to investment by the City of Bainbridge Island, and aided by a grant funded by the Climate Commitment Act, the Kicking Gas campaign will be able to provide education, resources, and financial assistance to residents as they make the switch to a cleaner heating solution.

The City of Bainbridge anticipates being able to support 15-25 households with subsidies in the first year of this program, with hopes to expand in future years.

New Whidbey Island Subsidy Level
With support from the Home Electrification and Appliance Rebates Program, funded from Washington’s Climate Commitment Act, Kicking Gas is launching a new subsidy level for heat pump projects. We are now offering 75% off the total project cost up to $10,000!

This stunning new subsidy level really will make a difference for low-moderate income clients effective on launch day, which was this past Monday October 14, 2024. You or folks in your community can learn how Kicking Gas works and fill out our 5-minute survey.

Donate to Kicking Gas Today
Last Saturday, Kicking Gas participated in Tending the Grassroots, a joint fundraiser supporting Kicking Gas, rePurpose Whidbey, United Student Leaders, and the projects of community-supported organizer and Kicking Gas co-founder Derek Hoshiko. At the event, Kicking Gas held an award ceremony and both reflected on two years of Kicking Gas, and looked forward to another exciting year. We’ll share pictures when they become available, but in the meantime, please consider supporting Kicking Gas with a tax-deductible donation. While we are grant funded, those funds are restricted and are only available during certain times of the year. We need your help to establish sustainable and diverse funding so we can continue to support climate action at home.

What’s With Heat Pumps?
With the holidays coming up, here’s some more information that can help you tell your friends, family, neighbors, and colleagues about making the switch.

Electric heat pumps are an increasingly popular home heating and cooling technology that is well suited to western Washington’s climate. This community-driven initiative is helping residents reduce carbon pollution, improve air quality and comfort in their homes, and save big on energy bills.

Ductless heat pumps also provide cooling in the increasingly hot summers, and filter the air of pollutants such as wildfire smoke and mold.

Shout Out to the Climate Commitment Act (CCA)
The CCA supports Washington’s climate action efforts by putting cap-and-invest dollars to work reducing climate pollution, creating jobs, and improving public health. Information about the CCA is available at www.climate.wa.gov.

Get Out the Vote
If you aren’t registered to vote, we strongly encourage you this year to register and vote. You can check out your county’s election office for information on how to register. It is simple and easy to do online, by mail, and even in person. We’ll send a follow-up email soon with important information about some of the ballot initiatives.

Thank you for all you do, and please do reach out to us at derek@kickgasnow.org if you have any questions, or would like to take the next step on your home electrification project today!

We hope you enjoy the Fall weather,

The Kicking Gas Team
